Efficient Gas Heat Beverly, MA

Heating System Upgrade With Rewards

A family in Beverly wanted to upgrade their gas heating system and couldn’t be more pleased with the end result. They received substantial rebates through Mass Save on both the new domestic hot water tank and the new 95% efficient Alpine gas fired boiler. Also through Mass Save they took advantage of 0% financing. They will continue saving on their heating bill for years to come. And the new system makes much more efficient use of space in their basement allowing for basement remodeling to convert much of the basement into living space.

Unexpected Benefits

The situation in this Beverly home was typical of what we run into. You’ve got equipment that is not up to today’s standards with the hot water heating system being old and the gas boiler rated well below the AFUE of boilers installed today. Consequently the family was wasting energy dollars.

The plan, as Ken outlined in the beginning of the video, was to remove the old equipment entirely from it’s present location and then install the new heating system along a wall in a new basement location. This is possible due to the way the Alpine is vented to the outdoors and has the desired effect of freeing up much needed space in the basement.

Rebates and Incentives

The family is replacing a gas fired water heater with an indirect fired water heater and will receive a rebate of about $400 through Mass Save. The new boiler is a 95% efficient Burnham Alpine gas boiler. They will receive between $1500-$2000 rebate on that through Mass Save. They’re also taking advantage of 0% interest financing through the Mass Save program. All the rebates and incentives combined with the future energy savings eliminates the financial pain associated with a full heating system upgrade.

Priority Hot Water

This new system has 3 zones. 1 zone for the upstairs living space, 1 zone for domestic hot water, and 1 zone for the basement. Hot water has priority. Which means that if a household member is taking a shower the other zones will shut down until the hot water event is over. No cold showers.

Each zone has it’s own pump along with shut-offs on both feed and return lines. This makes it possible to isolate, diagnose, and makes adjustments or repairs to any part of the system in the future if necessary.

As is always the case with Absolute Precision this system is up to code–and then some. In the video Ken points out the acid neutralizer, the low water cutout, and the carbon dioxide detector which we install on all heating systems.

Additional Resources

This boiler replacement project was fairly straightforward with a lot of credit going to the homeowner in timing, planning and organization. But every situation is different. Which is why we make videos  so that homeowners can easily see how the process plays out in different scenarios.

In this heating system replacement in Winthrop, which was a two family house, we replaced 2 boilers. The building had cast iron radiators which also required special attention.

Another project that was smooth sailing due to the homeowner’s research and preparation was this oil to gas conversion in Melrose.

This Andover boiler replacement was an upgrade from an old inefficient gas boiler to a new high efficiency Burnham Alpine which has an ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation.
