Converting a home’s heating system from oil to gas was already a popular home improvement project. But the latest wave of oil price rises has increased demand for this type of project as it’s a surefire way to save money on heating and hot water bills. An added bonus is that gas heat is more efficient and better for the environment.

High Efficiency Gas Boilers

In the video above Ken Roberts walks us through a project in Beverly. This was in a two family house. The objective was to replace two old oil fired boilers with two new gas fired high efficiency boilers. As ken explains in the video the house already had gas service. But only the first floor and it was for cooking only. So the gas company came out to properly enable gas service for two zones.

Replacing Three Large Oil Tanks with Gas Pipes is a No Brainer

As mentioned above Ken got the ball rolling by having the gas company come out to upgrade the gas service to accommodate two gas fired boilers. One for the first floor unit which would have two zones. One zone for heat and one for hot water. The other gas boiler would be three zones, two for heat and one for hot water.

Three large oil tanks would be removed from the basement. Where they were located, along an exterior basement wall, is a perfect location for the two new boilers along with associated mechanical equipment and water tanks. It was not necessary to replace the existing hot water tanks as they are in good condition and have a lifetime warranty.

Since the family still needed hot water while this project was ongoing Ken set up a system using five gallon buckets containing fuel oil to run the boilers and heat the water.

Reclaim Basement Space

As you watch the video it becomes obvious that an additional benefit from switching from oil to gas is that it frees up quite a lot of space in the basement. Since these high efficiency gas boilers are not vented through the chimney they can be located anywhere in the basement. It’s a much more compact installation and the elimination of the oil tanks is a big space saver.

 Safety Features

In the video Ken goes over some of the safety features in the Alpine gas boiler and associated mechanical equipment. For example, the boiler is equipped with a low water cutoff so if for some reason the water level in the boiler were to drop it would automatically shut off. Also, as with all systems designed by Absolute Precision, certain features are baked into the cake, such as the isolation of each valve. This makes any future maintenance issues a much simpler process.
