What is a sump pump

Typically found in the basement of homes a sump pump is used to remove water which accumulates in a sump basin. A sump or a sump basin generally refers to the lowest point in the basement where water would naturally flow. Many homes in the North of Boston area were constructed with a sump basin built in.

The two types of sump pump are pedestal and submersible. A pedestal pump would be mounted above the sump basin allowing for easier servicing. A submersible pump is less conspicuous as it’s mounted inside the basin. Submersibles are sealed to prevent electrical short circuits. You can expect a pedestal pump to last about 25 to 30 years while submersible pumps may only last 10 to 15 years. In either case proper installation along with maintenance sump pumpto keep the pump free of debris will aid in longevity.

The Problem with Moisture in Homes

Homes in Eastern Massachusetts are prone to flooding. Even homes that have never had a damp basement may experience flooding due to modifications made on the building, changes made on nearby property, or a number of other more mysterious reasons. A sump pump is a homeowner’s best defense against the nightmare a flooded basement often becomes.

Aside from the structural damage that will happen once moisture has been introduced to building materials there are proven health risks associated with moisture in homes. Moisture breeds bacteria. A moist environment is well suited to pests, allergens, dust mites, and mold. Consequently homes that have been infiltrated by water or moisture can cause respiratory illness as well as a host of other medical conditions.

A small leak is all it takes to grow mold or bacteria. Growth can begin in as little as 24-48 hours. You may not even notice it until the intrusion has reached the point where no amount of anti-bacterial cleaning products will be able to solve the problem.

Who Should Consider Installing a Sump Pump

If you have experienced water in your basement you should definitely install a sump pump. Water infiltration is usually weather related so if you live in a low lying area installing a sump pump would give you some peace of mind.
