Wilmington Water Supply

Water Hardness ChartPlumbing and water go hand in hand. Water that flows through pipes, fixtures, appliances, water heaters, and heating equipment contains minerals. The concentration of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium often determine how often you need plumbing repairs or replacement of equipment such as hot water heaters.

The minerals cause sediment buildup. If you know your water is hard you could be proactive by draining the hot water tank every few years to extend it’s life.

Wilmington has four active wells that serve as the primary supply of water for the system.  In times of high demand, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)  water is used to supplement the Town’s supply. In 2021, Town wells supplied about 80 percent of drinking water while the MWRA provided about 20 percent.

It is known that MWRA water is soft. It is not stated in Wilmington Water Quality Reports what the concentrations of calcium or magnesium are in the 4 town wells. We like official data so we did some research and found an old Geological Survey Water Supply Paper on groundwater conditions in the Wilmington-Reading area. It’s from The U.S. geological survey. They analyzed two types of samples: one is categorized as unconsolidated deposits, the other categorized as bedrock. The hardness ranged from 17 to 41 PPM and 56 to 82 PPM respectively. Unless the Wilmington water treatment process is removing these minerals, which we don’t see mentioned in any of their reports the conclusion would have to be that Wilmington water is moderately hard.

If interested the Geological Survey report is here.
