Heating System Replacement Rebates

Early Heating Equipment Replacement Rebates

We have great news for Massachusetts homeowners whose heating system is due for replacement. The rebate program, offered through Mass Save, will cover a significant portion of the cost. A slightly modified version of a plan offered in 2015, rebates are now available year-round. Through Mass Save eligible customers can receive up to $3,500 for a new boiler or up to $1,000 for a new furnace.

To qualify, Eversource and National Grid customers will need to have the new equipment installed by December 31, 2016. Here’s the breakdown:

Early heating equipment replacement rebates

Eligibility requirements state:

  • Fuel switching/conversion (i.e. oil to gas) is NOT eligible for this offer
  • Distribution change/conversion (i.e. forced hot water to forced hot air) is NOT eligible for this offer
  • At the time of the Site Visit, the customer must have an existing, functional boiler (at least 30 years old) or furnace (at least 12 years old), fueled by natural gas, propane, or oil
  • Applicants must be a residential customer of a Mass Save Utility or Energy Efficiency Service Provider
  • Municipal Electric customers must heat with natural gas provided by a participating Gas Utility
  •  Equipment must be installed in a 1-4 family home
  • Customers receiving the Early Heating Equipment Replacement Rebate are NOT eligible for any other Mass Save or Gas Networks heating equipment rebates on installed equipment

A Breakdown of Heating Equipment Rebates and Savings

If your heating fuel is oil you can replace a 12 year old furnace to receive $750. Replacing a 30 year old boiler will get you either $1,700 (forced hot water) or $1,900 (steam).

Gas customers receive more because the required AFUE of the new equipment is considerably higher. If you’re replacing a gas furnace (12 years old or more) you’ll receive $1,000. A gas steam boiler brings $1,900, a gas forced hot water water boiler gets $3,000 if you occupy the dwelling or $3,500 if you rent it out.

The icing on the cake is that replacing old inefficient heating equipment will save you a significant amount of money on your fuel bill month after month, year after year. And of course if your equipment qualifies for the program it’s most probable that you need to replace it anyway.
